How Pocket Cloud works

Pocket Cloud runs the emulator inside your browser and reads your ROM on your device. The ROM is uploaded only if you opt in to keeping games in your account (needed for link play); by default only save data is backed up.

The emulator runs on your device

The emulators are WebAssembly programs that run in the page, so the game is computed on your own device rather than streamed from a server. Game Boy and Game Boy Color games use binjgb, and Game Boy Advance games use mGBA. See the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance pages.

Your ROM stays on your device unless you choose otherwise

You pick a ROM file you already have. Pocket Cloud reads it in your browser and works out a fingerprint of it (a SHA-256 hash) locally. By default it does not upload the file anywhere.

The app can remember games in your browser's storage so you only pick a file once. If you sign in, you can optionally choose to keep your games in your account so they show up on every device; nothing is uploaded until you say yes. Online link play also needs the game in your account, as described in Link cable play.

Saves: local first, then the cloud

  1. When the game saves to its battery memory, Pocket Cloud stores that save in your browser.
  2. With cloud backup on (the default), the save is uploaded a few seconds later, and again when you leave or hide the tab: to your account if you are signed in, or under a random anonymous key stored in that browser if you are not.
  3. On another device, sign in with the same email and open the same game; the save is fetched and you continue from it.

If two devices have different saves, Pocket Cloud does not silently overwrite one: when it cannot tell which is the right one, it asks you to choose. It also keeps a few earlier versions of each save, so you can go back to one.

Signing in is by email: you receive a one-time code and there is no password. Without signing in, saves are kept in the browser and, with cloud backup on (the default), also backed up under a random anonymous key stored in that browser; signing in ties them to your email so they follow you across devices.

Offline play

After one visit online, Pocket Cloud keeps the app and emulators on your device through a service worker, so it opens and plays games stored on that device without a network. Saves made offline are kept locally and sync once you reconnect. You can also install it as an app from a supporting browser. Signing in, cloud sync and link play need a connection.
